Iva "Pug" Melancon

Iva “ Pug” Melancon of Sulphur, LA passed away on June 9, 2017. She was born in Vinton, LA to Ben and Grace Hudson. She was preceded in death by all seven of her siblings: Mae Smith, Kenneth Hudson, Benjamin Hudson, Jr., Grace Elanor Brookshire, Jack Hudson, Clifford Hudson, and Robert Hudson.

Mrs. Melancon was a teacher who spent her entire thirty-one year career in Calcasieu Parish. She earned her teaching certificate from Southwestern Louisiana Institute (currently U.L.L.) in 1939 and began teaching in Westlake, then Vinton, and finally Sulphur. Her years of service in Sulphur included instruction at D.S. Perkins Elementary, Frasch Elementary and LeBlanc Middle School.

She positively influenced hundreds of children in our community. Many former co-workers and students maintained close relationships with Mrs. Melancon over the years. One co-worker years ago quipped, “Heck, she’s taught just about everyone I know who has lived between the Sabine and Calcasieu Rivers.” Her love for her profession, and more importantly her children was clear and ever present.

Mrs. Melancon was preceded in death by her husband of forty-six years, Curtis J. Melancon. She is survived by a son, Curtis J. Melancon, Jr. and wife Janice of Benton, LA; daughters, Judy Melancon and Becky Melancon both of Sulphur, LA; and granddaughter, Maggie Yee and husband, Justin of Houston, TX.

The family wishes to thank the following caregivers who were present over the last years of Mrs. Melancon’s life; Leola Riedeau, Mandy Francis, Vickie Boudreaux, Linda Harris, Lorraine Lewis and Ethel Leday. The family also extends special appreciation to Dr. Maureen Lannan; Southern Home Healthy; Jennings Hospice; Brighton Hospice; Julie Peterson; Mike Kelly; Tammy Francis and Torrie Francis.

Mrs. Melancon was a proud, lifelong Methodist and was a member of Henning Memorial United Methodist Church. For many years she was active as a Sunday School Teacher and was an involved contributor to the youth program of her church.

Guestbook

  1. I cannot express all that I felt upon learning of your mother's passing. Please know that Tess and I extend our sympathy and best wishes to all of you. Aunt Iva will be missed, but her legacy will always be a positive part of this world.

  2. So sorry for your loss. Praying the family finds comfort during this difficult time.

  3. Curtis, Becky, and Judy please accept my heartfelt condolences on the loss of your mother. She was a wonderful and inspirational teacher, mentor and friend. Both Jody and I were fortunate to have been her students. I hope that the students I have had are half as grateful to have known me, as I was to have known her. She was a teacher's teacher, someone I always hoped to emulate. God truly blessed those of us who were her students. May He comfort you with the sure knowledge of her great faithfulness and live of Him.
