James Harold Givens

February 11, 1955 ~ September 29, 2012

James Givens passed away on September 29,2012 in Lafayette, LA at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital. James was born February 11, 1955 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He had lived in Phoenix, AZ and has lived in Sulphur, LA for the last ten years. James loved Tulsa, his home town but enjoyed his time in both Phoenix and Sulphur. James is the brother of Wanda Williams of Sulphur, LA and is also the brother of Bill Givens of Phoenix, AZ. In addition James is survived by a loving niece, Kimberly Thomas of Sulphur, LA and a nephew, Richard Williams of Dallas, Texas. Other surviving family members are Jennifer Jessup of Monroe, LA and Michael Paul Jessup of Phoenix, AZ, John and Carolyn Richard of Sulphur, LA and Tanya Richard of Sulphur, LA. James was loved by his entire family and many other neighbors and friends. James was preceded in death by his mother Ruth Givens and father Harold Givens and his uncle Duncan Wood and Aunt Alma Wood, all from Tulsa, OK. James was a loving brother and uncle and friend. He loved his family and his pets and his foster pets too. He always had a great sense of humor and loved good jokes and Saturday Night Live. His mother taught him about gardening and that was always his favorite hobby. His family will miss him and his big laugh. The family would like to extend a special thank you to all the ICU staff both nurses and doctors at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital and to the Heart Of Hospice staff that provided wonderful care and comfort to James. Their expert support was much appreciated. We also would like to thank the staff at Lake Charles Mental Health Center for their support of James over the last ten years. A private family memorial service will be held in the near future to celebrate James life. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to either 4 Paws Society, 465 Hardy Road, Sulphur, LA 70665 or to the National Association of Mental Illness (NAMI), 715 Ryan Street, Suite 203, Lake Charles, LA 70601.

  1. Dear Wanda & Bill, I was so sorry to read about James in the Tulsa World. I will always remember the good times we had when we were younger. I will cherish the memories of the last time James & Bill came thru Tulsa & met Mom & I & the special visit we all had. All of you will be in my thoughts & prayers. Love, Carol Stevens

  3. I went to school with James from K-12. He was always nice, friendly and funny. When I think of him I remember his thick hair and cute smile. He is remembered fondly by others that attended school with him too. Especially, those from John Marshall Elementary. I am sorry for your loss.

  5. I am so very sorry for your loss, I went to high school with James and remember fondly. He was a wonderful person and I liked him very much.He was always funny and loved to make us laugh. He will be missed.

  6. I was so sorry to hear of James' passing. Paul Looney and I were just talking the other day wondering what had happened to him. I had tried to find him on facebook recently to see about catching up. He was a very special person in my young life. Hope you all are well.
